World premiere of KALI YUGA
Gamelan Sekar Jaya performs the world premiere of Kali Yuga. Drawn from the ancient texts of the Mahabharata, this dazzling new dance drama is a deep artistic response to recent world conflicts including those in Indonesia. Kali Yuga is the creation of an international team of artists, who engaged in an intensive two-year interchange of ideas, historical perspectives, and modern dramatic techniques in exploring the last of the four Ages in Hindu philosophy. Kali Yuga features acclaimed Balinese and American dancers, a thirty-musician bronze gamelan orchestra, poetry, song, ambient sound, and video installations.
Presented by Cal Performances in cooperation with World Arts West, Kali Yuga will be performed at Zellerbach Hall, Berkeley, on October 14, 2006 at 2pm and 8pm.
